The present study examines trends and factors related to the likelihood of offering Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles courses in the Chicago Public Schools from the 2016-2017 to 2022-2023 school years. The number of schools offering Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles courses increased significantly during this period from 12 schools in the 2016-2017 school year to 34 in the 2022-2023 school year. A multilevel binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the contributions of school demographics and school capacity to the likelihood of offering Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles courses. The findings showed that schools with a higher percentage of Asian students were more likely to offer Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles courses while schools with a higher percentage of special education students, students eligible for free or reduced lunch and Hispanic or Latinx students were less likely to offer Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles courses. In terms of school capacity, the presence of qualified Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles or Exploring Computer Science teachers, larger school size and strong teaching practices significantly increased the likelihood of offering Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles courses. Conversely, higher family involvement was found to slightly reduce the likelihood of offering Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles courses. The implications for policymakers as well as the limitations and future directions are discussed.
