This study interrogates the impact of the Exploring Connections to Computer Science (EC2CS) program to advance culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) in high school computer science (CS) classes. Intensive, semi-structured interviews with ten program participant teachers are the main source of data. The findings revealed that the EC2CS program helped teachers increase their CRP efforts by providing tools to collect and interpret information on students’ identities and interests, and activities to encourage connections between students’ lives and CS content. However, the data also revealed barriers to integrate culturally responsive teaching strategies into curricula. Through collaboration among practitioners and researchers, we discuss the ways in which this study may advance CRP efforts in CS education and what additional guidance may be needed.
